What's a 404 Page?

Just about everyone, at one time or another, has encountered a "404" web page.  This is the Error Page you see when you click or type a url address which no longer exists or has been moved.  In most cases, you see a message like, "404 Error:  File Not Found!" (see example below).

Did you know you can customize this web page to display whatever you would like?  Yes, you can.  It's important that you customize this page for a few reasons.  First, it improves the user experience with your website and helps retain visitors with the assistance of a link back to your home page.  The second reason is that the major search engines are doing it for you.  What?  In many browsers, Yahoo, Google, MSN are directing website users to their own web page when this error occurs away from the website which the user was trying to locate.  Having a customized 404 page is essential.
